DAAD Scholarship in Germany for Masters and PHD | Fully Funded
Objective:
The DAAD aims to support the education and training of specialists from developing and newly industrialized countries through its postgraduate study programs. The organization recognizes the importance of well-trained local experts who are connected to international partners in driving sustainable development in their countries. By offering scholarships, the DAAD provides foreign graduates from eligible countries, with a minimum of two years of professional experience, the opportunity to pursue a postgraduate or Master’s degree at a German university. In exceptional cases, doctoral degrees can also be pursued, enabling recipients to obtain a Master’s or PhD qualification in Germany.
Eligibility:
Applicants must be graduates with a minimum of two years of professional experience from the countries listed as eligible.
Funding:
Individual scholarships are available exclusively for postgraduate courses in Germany, as listed in the “List of all Postgraduate courses with application deadlines 2024/25.”
Duration:
The funding duration ranges from 12 to 42 months, depending on the chosen study program.
Value:
The monthly stipend provided depends on the academic level, with 934 euros for graduates and 1,200 euros for doctoral candidates. Additionally, the scholarships cover expenses for health, accident, and personal liability insurance. A travel allowance is provided unless it is already covered by the recipient’s home country or another funding source. In certain circumstances, scholarship holders may receive additional benefits such as a monthly rent subsidy or an allowance for accompanying family members.
Selection Criteria:
Candidates must meet the academic requirements necessary for successful completion of a study program in Germany. They should have achieved above-average results in their first academic exam and possess adequate language skills. Additionally, candidates should hold a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant subject and demonstrate at least two years of professional experience. Motivation that is aligned with development goals, as well as the willingness to take on social responsibility and initiate and support processes of change in their personal and professional environments, are also important factors in the selection process.

Eligibility Criteria:
The typical scholarship holder must meet the following requirements:
- Employed by a public authority, state, or private company in a developing country, actively involved in the planning and implementation of projects related to technological, economic, or social development policies.
- Possesses a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field, typically completed in four years.
- Demonstrates outstanding academic performance, with results ranking in the upper third of their graduating class.
- Has a minimum of two years of professional experience in a related field after obtaining the first degree (Bachelor’s).
- Academic degrees obtained should not be more than six years old.
- Applicants who have resided in Germany for more than 15 months at the time of application are ineligible.
Language Skills:
For study programs conducted in German (including a preparatory 6-month German language course in Germany), applicants must meet the following language requirements:
- Successful completion of the language examination DSH 2 or TestDaF 4 before the start of the study program.
- Therefore, a minimum language proficiency level of B1 in German is required at the time of application, which must be verified by providing a valid certificate.
Note: It is not possible to pass the required German language courses (DSH or TestDaF) without prior basic knowledge of the German language (at least B1 Level), even with the preceding six-month intensive course in Germany. Passing the language test is a formal prerequisite for enrollment at the respective German university.
For study programs conducted in English, applicants must provide one of the following language proficiency certificates:
- IELTS (Band 6)
- TOEFL (minimum scores: 550 paper-based, 213 computer-based, 80 internet-based)

APPLICATION PROCEDURE
Application Deadline:
Please refer to the scholarship brochure or the website of your chosen study program for the application deadline, as it varies depending on the program.
Application Documents:
Applications should be directly sent to the respective course or university. Please visit their websites to find the application procedure, including online applications, application deadlines, and required documents. Note that applications sent to the DAAD will not be forwarded to the course/university.
You can apply for up to three courses. If applying to multiple courses, indicate the order of priority in the DAAD application forms and maintain consistency throughout the application process.
Required Documents (in the following order):
- Completed and signed checklist.
- DAAD application form for a research/study scholarship (type your answers or ensure legibility).
- Curriculum vitae in reverse chronological order using the europass template, providing comprehensive information about your studies and practical experience.
- Letter of Motivation, highlighting academic, professional, and personal reasons for applying to the program.
- Important: If applying for multiple postgraduate courses (up to 3), explain your choice of courses and prioritize them in the letter of motivation. Submit the same letter of motivation to all the postgraduate degree programs you apply to.
- Letter of recommendation from your current employer, including official letterhead, signature, official stamp, and a recent date (not in a sealed envelope).
- Certificate(s) of Employment from employer(s), demonstrating at least two years of relevant work experience after completing your Bachelor’s degree until the time of application. If possible, include a guarantee of re-employment from your current employer upon returning home.
- Recent proof of Language Skills:
- English: IELTS or TOEFL (Institutional TOEFL is not accepted)
- German: Required for courses taught in German.
- Copies of higher education degree certificates. If the original is not in German or English, provide a certified translation, ensuring legibility.
- Copy of full transcript of records. If the grading system is not included, provide an explanation.
- Applicants from the People’s Republic of China should submit an APS Certificate with their application documents.
Note: Some courses may require additional documents. For detailed information, refer to the relevant course description in the brochure or on the respective websites.
IMPORTANT:
- Submit your complete application in English or German.
- Incomplete applications will not be considered.
- When applying to multiple postgraduate courses (up to 3), submit a motivation letter explaining your choice and prioritization. Failure to provide this information may result in the application being disregarded or withdrawal of an already awarded scholarship.
- Check the requirements of the respective university regarding certified copies.

Application and Selection Procedure: Step 1: Submit your complete application(s) directly to the relevant postgraduate course. Step 2: A selection committee will identify potential candidates for a DAAD scholarship. Step 3: The suggested candidates will be contacted by the DAAD to upload their complete application to the DAAD Portal. Step 4: The selection process will be finalized, and the suggested candidates will be notified accordingly.
IMPORTANT:
Make sure to have a copy of each document in your application, as you will need to upload them (as PDF files) to the DAAD Portal if you are suggested for a DAAD scholarship.
